Former Indian captain MS Dhoni, Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu and coach Pullela Gopichand will be receiving Padma awards on 26th January 2017 on the eve of 68th Republic Day. Dhoni was previously awarded the Padma Shri in 2009 and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in 2007 by the Sports Ministry.
PV Sindhu, Rio Olympics silver medallist was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian honor in March 2015.
Gopichand runs the Gopichand Badminton Academy and has in the past received Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award and even Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award.
Government sources said around 120 people have been chosen, a significant number of them ‘unsung’ heroes.
