WITHDRAWAL OF DISTRICT STATUS OF EAST-SOUTH KAMRUP: TARUN GOGOI URGES SARBANANDA TO REVOKE DECISION

Former chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday took potshots at Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for the latter’s decision to scrap district status awarded to East Kamrup and South Kamrup. The former chief minister urged Chief Minister Sonowal to revoke the decision. Training his guns further, the former chief minister alleged that district status was awarded to Majuli in spite of lack in infrastructure. The Sarbananda Sonowal government on Friday decided to withdraw district status bestowed on South Kamrup and East Kamrup districts, reducing the total number of districts in Assam from 35 to 33, and to constitute a cabinet sub-committee to decide on the viability of 24 subdivisions created by the previous Congress regime. Out of seven new districts created by the previous Congress government, five districts – Charaideo, Hojai, South Salmara-Mankachar, Biswanath and West Karbi Anglong – will remain the same.[Source::Dy365]
